IP verification is the process of checking the internet protocol (IP) address associated with a user or device to identify information that may indicate where a connection is coming from and whether it presents potential fraud risk.
An IP address can provide useful context during customer onboarding and online activity. When combined with other identity and fraud checks, IP verification can help businesses spot suspicious connections, identify unusual behaviour and make more informed risk decisions.
How does IP verification work?
When a customer accesses a website or application, their IP address can be assessed against a range of information and risk indicators. Depending on the verification service being used, checks may include:
- The IP address and associated geographic location
- Country and region Internet service provider (ISP)
- Connection type
- Whether the IP is associated with a VPN, proxy or Tor network
- Whether the IP has been linked to known fraudulent or suspicious activity Whether the connection appears to come from a data centre
The results can then be used alongside other KYC, identity verification and fraud checks to assess the overall level of risk associated with a customer or transaction.
Why is IP verification important?
IP verification can give businesses another source of information when assessing online customers. For example, a customer may provide an identity document showing an address in one country while their connection appears to originate from another. This does not automatically mean the customer is fraudulent, as legitimate reasons can exist for differences in location.
However, it can give a compliance or fraud team a reason to carry out further checks. IP information can also help identify connections associated with VPNs, proxies, data centres or known malicious activity. This can be particularly useful where businesses need to distinguish between genuine customers and potentially suspicious online behaviour.
IP verification and KYC
IP verification can support KYC and identity verification by providing additional context around a customer’s digital activity. It should not be treated as proof of identity on its own. Instead, IP information can be considered alongside identity documents, biometric checks, phone verification, sanctions screening and other available signals. Using several signals together can give businesses a clearer basis for deciding when a customer can move through onboarding automatically and when further review may be needed.
IP verification and fraud prevention
Fraudsters may use tools such as VPNs, proxies or compromised devices to hide or change the apparent location of their connection. IP verification can help identify these indicators and flag activity for further assessment.
For example, repeated applications from connections linked to suspicious IP addresses may warrant additional checks before an account is approved. The aim is not to block every connection that looks unusual. Legitimate customers may also use VPNs or connect from unexpected locations. IP verification is most useful when it forms part of a wider risk-based approach.
