We are seeking an experienced Senior Backend Developer to design, develop and scale secure, high-availability systems that power real-time identity verification and business onboarding across regulated markets. You will operate in a security-critical, compliance-driven environment where performance, reliability, and data integrity are paramount.

Our backend ecosystem comprises primarily of Spring Java applications with some Typescript lambdas. These integrate with our front-end stacks using Angular and React. As part of the development team, you’ll be helping to evolve and modernize this architecture; ensuring scalability, maintainability, and long-term technical direction.

Core responsibilities

  • Build scalable, secure backend systems using Java (Spring) and Typescript
  • Contribute to the evolution of automation pipelines and AI-assisted engineering practices
  • Design, implement, and maintain backend services and APIs
  • Integrate new solutions and APIs into existing frontends 
  • Champion secure development standards across backend systems
  • Optimise database schemas and queries for performance and reliability
  • Ensure robust data handling and error management
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and improve existing server-side code
  • Assist in all areas of the Software Development Lifecycle including planning in Agile (Sprint) ceremonies 
  • Play a key role in architectural decisions and the evolution of backend engineering standards
  • Participate in code reviews and mentor junior developers
  • Maintain documentation for backend components and services
  • Work with cloud infrastructure (AWS) to deploy and scale backend services

Key requirements

  • Strong professional experience in Java (Spring), and exposure to other languages, especially Typescript, is a plus. 
  • Eagerness to adapt and learn new tools, frameworks and languages 
  • Strong experience working with relational databases such as MySQL 
  • Experience leveraging AI-assisted development tools to improve productivity and code quality 
  • RESTful API design and implementation 
  • Strong understanding of server-side application architecture 
  • Codebase version management (Git or similar) 
  • Experience working with CI/CD pipelines 
  • Experience with performance tuning and debugging 
  • Proven ability to work with Cloud native services such as AWS, Azure or similar 

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of backend development experience, with proven track record
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Maths, Engineering, or related field (preferred)
